Throughout my blog I have covered issues such as why cyberbullying is a big deal and how to prevent it but have not discussed why it needs to be prevented. This issue is such a relevant one today because the mass use of technology has caused the majority of teens to experience at least one case of cyberbullying. But why is it important that parents, educators and bystanders do their absolute best to prevent and/or stop cyberbullying? The answer to that question is simple. Because cyberbullying is wrong and it can hurt people, so much so that it can cause people to commit suicide. Rebecca Sedwick, a twelve year old girl, committed suicide by jumping from a concrete silo because she had been tormented by two girls. According to an article titled Teen Charged in Fatal Cyberbullying Case of Rebecca Sedwick to Remain in Jail, Rebecca began to be bullied in December of 2012 when one of the suspects (who bullied Rebecca), who was fourteen at the time, started dating a boy who used to date Rebecca. This girl sent messages to Rebecca on Facebook encouraging Rebecca to kill herself. This girl even convinced Rebecca’s friends to turn on her. In fact, one of Rebecca’s previous friends was encouraged by the fourteen year old suspect to beat up Rebecca. Although Rebecca changed schools the following year with the hopes of escaping the bullying, she was not able to escape the bullying that occurred online. This is a very extreme case of cyberbullying, however, it shows the importance of the prevention of cyberbullying. It is evident that Rebecca’s parents knew of the bullying and wanted to put an end to it because they moved her to a new school, however because this was a case of cyberbullying and the suspects did not need to see Rebecca in order to bully her, the bullying continued. I believe that this suicide could have been prevented if Rebecca’s parents had known what steps to take when dealing with cyberbullying. If Rebecca’s parents had contacted their local authorities soon enough, then the police could have put an end to the cyberbullying before Rebecca chose that the only way out was suicide. As I said before, this is a very extreme case of cyberbullying, and while most other cases wouldn’t be quite like this one, all cases of cyberbullying should be prevented or stopped before they have a chance to snowball into something more serious. My line of inquiry will be focusing on the issue of cyberbullying. After hearing one of my peers speak about an article on cyberbullying in class, I found myself wondering why cyberbullying was such a big deal and who all was impacted by it and thus decided to focus my line of inquiry on cyberbullying. My blog will not only focus on why cyberbullying is a big deal and who it impacts, but will also cover topics such as how to prevent cyberbullying from occurring, and how to get help after dealing with cyberbullying. While my blog is open to anyone who wants to read it, those who have personally dealt with cyberbullying may find the blog more useful. I have read multiple articles that discuss cyberbullying and give reason as to why cyberbullying is such a prominent form of bullying today and have come to the conclusion that cyberbullying is at an all time high due to the use of social media and technology. Exploring the topic of cyberbullying is very important because the use of technology and social media is likely to increase, therefore the amount of cyberbullying is also likely to increase. As of now, there is not much that I know about cyberbullying. In fact, because neither I or any of those close to me have been impacted by cyberbullying I don’t understand why cyberbullying is such a big deal. However, it is clear to me that many people struggle with this problem which makes me curious to learn more about cyberbullying. Bibliography
